Should You Rely On CQC Ratings To Help You Choose A Residential Care Home?

residential care home

Choosing where your loved ones will live is a difficult decision. Finding a residential care home that suits their individual needs if they have learning disabilities adds additional pressure. You want to know that they are happy and well cared for where they live.

Do CQC ratings help?

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) provides a way to help with that decision through ratings. As an independent regulator for England, the CQC inspects and publishes reports on health and social care providers.

Residential and day care facilities are given an overall rating from the CQC, are given outstanding, good, requires improvement or inadequate. They also rate five key areas: safety, effectiveness, caring, responsiveness, and whether the facility is well-led.

It is also worth reading the full inspection report for more specific details. However, the CQC ratings only provide a small snapshot of the care home being inspected. There is much more to consider when making a life-changing decision for someone you care about.

Does the care home cater for their specific needs?

An initial conversation with their social work team is a good place to start. A needs assessment may be required to provide more information about the level of care required.

This can help you ensure the home you choose can accommodate their particular disability and provide the support they need for a fulfilling life.

Have you visited the care home?

The CQC provides only one viewpoint, but your opinion counts too. Visiting the home will allow you and your loved one to see what it is like in real life. You can spend time talking to the staff members and ask questions about daily life and how they care for residents.

It will also let you see if the residents seem happy and have activities that are stimulating and enjoyable. You can see for yourself whether it is well organised, clean and comfortable.
